Early instrumental brass teaching

“You are exactly what the Brass teaching world needs! ”
Sarah Slater, University of Music Karlsruhe and Trossingen

How should we teach six year olds? What consequences can you as a teacher draw from the demands required to learn a brass instrument.?
I will show you how to plan your lessons in a child friendly, efficient and lively way.

The topics are:

  • Instrument choice:
The instrument given to beginners is usually a Bb trumpet, which is often too big and heavy for children. This causes problems with posture and breathing. I will demonstrate alternative instruments and how you can work them.
  • Developing embochure:
The pupils shall develop a feeling for embochure and breathing in a playful way. I will demonstrate various methods and suggest required teaching materials.
  • Work methods:
Learning whilst playing not only motivates but it’s fun too. The most natural way for children to learn is through play. I possess a wealth of exercises and tips, which in a playful way, promote blowing and general musical development.
  • Encouraging learning:
I will demonstrate how to create a teaching plan which caters to each child individually. Furthermore, how to engage all students in group learning sessions.
  • Organizational, methodological and pedagological requirements:
Structuring lessons/ communicating in lessons/ teaching materials.

At the same time all these topics create the foundation for group learning know how
